Healing Modalities

This is an in-depth look at the history and context of the modalities offered.

AROMATHERAPY

Aromatherapy is the sacred art and science of utilizing naturally extracted essential oils from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit. Through the inhalation of essential oils or absorption through the skin using a carrier, aromatherapy seeks to unify physiological, psychological and spiritual processes to enhance an individual’s innate healing process.

Aromatherapy connects us with the vital essence of a plant – its core chemical constituents and its healing spirit – and can be used to support and balance many systems of the body, including the mind and emotions, the nervous system, respiration, digestion, the endocrine system, circulation, muscles and joints, and the reproductive system. Aromatic plants are a powerful container and vehicle for supporting spiritual work, meditation and yoga, interconnection, protection, daily self care and overall wellbeing. Aromatherapy can also be used to cleanse and harmonize the environments we spend time in, like the home and office.

Essential oils are a very potent and concentrated form of the plant, and it takes a tremendous amount of plant material to create just one dram of oil. With this in mind, the authenticity and purity of essential oils, as well as a healthy respect for their sacredness and preciousness, must be at the very core of the practice of aromatherapy. We work exclusively with genuine, authentic and unadulterated essential oils that are always organic, unsprayed or wild harvested, and are never extracted with solvents or carbon dioxide (absolutes and CO2 extracts). This article is a terrific primer for those seeking more clarification on the quality of essential oils.

The International Federation of Aromatherapists advises against the internal use of essential oils unless under the direct supervision of a licensed and trained medical professional, which we endorse. Unfortunately, with the proliferation of multi-level marketing (MLM) essential oil companies, there is a lot of misinformation out there about internal ingestion. We suggest this article for a good overview of the safety concerns.

COSMIC EARTH REIKI

Earth-based healing, the world’s most ancient spiritual practice, teaches us that when we open to the invisible, living energy of the universe and to the language of the Earth, we can restore and realign ourselves on all levels, allowing our vitality to flow freely within us, and to move in openness and harmony with the unfolding of life all around us.

Earth-based spiritual healing practices utilize the elemental forces of nature, helping spirits and sacred objects to heal and balance, often incorporating drums, rattles, songs, movement and ceremonial attire to open into an expanded state of consciousness and connection.

In Cosmic Earth Reiki, a healing art inspired by the teachings of Llyn Roberts, earth-based healing like transforming intrusive energy, removing energetic cords, recovering soul loss and journeying to the unseen realms for wisdom and healing, are joined with the restorative touch of Reiki.

PLANT SPIRIT HEALING

Plant Spirit Healing cultivates a living relationship with the spirit of plants. Through sensory connection and meditation with plant energy, the practitioner establishes a way of listening and communicating through the body, creating direct connection with the “spirit,” or vital essence of different plant species, each transmitting its own dynamic imprint of healing and wisdom.

These plants become allies, working with and through the practitioner to restore the subtle flow and balance of the energy body – the living universal energy that moves through us and around us – where it is believed imbalance on all levels originates. The innate sentience, or living essence, of the plant supports us in releasing blockages and clearing out stagnation, restoring the free flow of this life-giving energy, and inviting us to a deep remembering of our wholeness – a vast space of peace and harmony from which our true essential spirit can be fully embodied and expressed.

A Plant Spirit Healing session may work with chakra balancing, ancestry and family tree healing, integrity and alignment, soul contracts and other tools that initiate a direct connection with the healing spirit of plants and support us toward a new pattern of being – one that allows us to step into a deeper wisdom of self and to foster an inner environment of love and compassion so we can fully express who we truly are.

Plant Spirit Healing is a healing practice realized by Pam Montgomery, founder of the Partner Earth Education Center at Sweetwater Sanctuary in Danby, Vermont.

REIKI

Reiki is a system of healing originating in Japan in the 1920s. It was created by Mikao Usui as a way to bring oneself toward embodied enlightenment through direct connection to “reiki” or universal life force energy, also known as chi (qi) – the life-giving flow of energy that runs through everyone and everything.

Usui experienced this force of vital energy spontaneously awaken and flow through his body atop Mt. Kurama near Kyoto during a fast. He went on to share this energy with others for healing by passing the energy through his hands.

He also began teaching this practice by “attuning” or initiating practitioners to the vibration of Reiki energy. This energy is innate within all of us, but it often becomes blocked or stagnant over the course of life. With a Reiki attunement, the body’s connection to universal life force energy is re-opened and cleared so that it may flow freely through practitioners and be utilized to heal themselves and others.

The other main focus of Usui Reiki is to live by certain integral principles everyday that help create balance, and support one in taking responsibility for their health and wellbeing.

Usui was a Tendai Buddhist and was deeply immersed in the study of the sutras of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism, or Tantric Buddhism. For this reason, many have maintained that Reiki is Tibetan in origin. It seems more likely that Usui’s intimate study of the Tantric sutra texts, as well as his studies of ancient Eastern healing traditions inspired the philosophy and methodology of the Reiki healing system.

Reiki today remains true to Usui’s use of “attunements” for training practitioners, passed down by Reiki Masters who can trace their lineage back to Usui, although there are many new forms of Reiki that expand on the traditions.

A Reiki practitioner relies on traditional hand placements to guide the Reiki energy through them for the client, who remains fully clothed for the session. It’s important to distinguish that this energy is not the practitioner’s energy, but rather the free flow of universal life force energy transmitted to the client to activate the body’s own innate healing process. It is often experienced as a gentle heat.

Reiki is a loving, radiant energy that never harms, so it really can meet you wherever you are on your healing journey. It can nourish all the vital functions of the body, transform harmful thought patterns, cleanse environmental toxins and other stagnant energy, and transport you to a deep inner place of peace and healing.
